You know that feeling you get after reading an incredible historical novel? Where youโve been so immersed into the characters and culture and stakes that youโre impatient for us to figure out time travel so you can go there yourself?
I would often feel this way as a child, as my homeschool curriculum had me diving into world history and classic literature. I first fell in love with the history of the British Isles at nine years old, and was reading Winston Churchillโs A History of the English-Speaking Peoples (the driest yet somehow most fascinating collection) by the time I was 16. I took an extra year in high school just so I could have more time to read all the history books the curriculum suggested.
History is special. Itโs fascinating. Second only to the Bible, it is the one thing I wish everyone around the world had a chance to truly know.
The day we forget our past is the day we repeat its mistakesโand the day we dive into it is the day we find its courage.
Thatโs why I write.
As a missionary kid in Kenya who watched my country divide in national unrest, then grew up with years of trauma and bullying, stories that gave me courage were priceless. As I struggled with chronic illness and self-doubt, stories that gave me strength were my lifeline.
When I walked through darkness and defeat, stories that showed me the hope of Jesus were the light at the end of the tunnel.
These are the stories tucked in the recesses of history . . . and they are what I want to find, explore, and bring to life, so that the next girl going through a hard time can find hope.
